Do I Need Mission Trip Insurance?

When you're on a church-sponsored trip, insurance coverage can vary.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

Matthew 28:19-20

This is the last command that Jesus gave his disciples recorded in the book of Matthew. Across the nation, churches have taken the command of Jesus seriously by sending missionaries and short term mission teams to every corner of the earth.

One thing that is often overlooked in all the excitement is the insurance gap that can be created by a foreign exposure. Here are 3 reasons why it’s important to consider travel insurance for your short term mission trips:

Health insurance may not extend overseas

Many health insurance providers limit coverage to the U.S. and its territories, and you may be stuck with substantial medical bills, should you sustain an injury on your trip.

Emergency evacuation

On rare occasions, circumstances may arise when expensive evacuation may be necessary. In most cases, it would be caused by an illness contracted on foreign soil. Trip travel insurance can be a great help to churches when one of their team members need to be transported or evacuated.

Extenuating circumstances

There seems to be no end to the possible things that can prevent your trip from happening. Hurricanes, canceled flights, civil insurrections, etc. are just a few things that have come close to thwarting some of my trips in the past. With the right travel insurance, you can have peace of mind when traveling to a foreign land.

When I was 17 years old, I went on my first trip to Haiti. During that trip, I sustained a deep cut to my palm, stepped on a piece of glass and fell on a rusty nail. I was a mess! Thankfully, I had purchased travel insurance and received the medical attention that I needed.

By all means, take the gospel to the ends of the earth. However, do so in a way that protects your team members and their families.
