New Federal Requirements for Youth Sports Related to Sexual Abuse

Take a look at these 3 new requirements.

New Federal Requirements for Youth Sports Related to Sexual Abuse

The USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal brought a lot of attention to growing concerns for children while participating in sports.  This might have been the final catalyst motivating Congress to pass a new law, in late 2017, aimed at preventing child sexual abuse.

The Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 carries three new requirements:

  1. Mandatory Reporting Changes
  2. Prevention Training Requirements
  3. Prevention Policies Requirements

While the scope of the new Act might leave some room for interpretation, especially to Ladybug type programs, and other youth sport organization participants (camps, public and private schools, country clubs, sport facilities), at a minimum it creates a ‘standard of care’ that has been lacking in some of these organizations.

The concern for your For Profit or Not For Profit organization should not be solely based on how this new Act applies to you, but instead, how can you improve on the safety of your children participants, including what resources are available to that end.
