Updating Your Resume – Tips & Free Help

This is why you need to take the time to polish your resume.

DON’T: Use a black and white resume with no design. While this may be easy, it generally won’t garner much attention.
DO: Make your resume modern and creative (to an extent). Let your profession guide your design. If you’re an artist, make it look artsy, if you’re an architect, use common shapes used for buildings, etc. However, don’t get too creative. If your design makes it difficult for employers to find what they are looking for, they will toss it.
DON’T: Use paragraphs or other blocks of text. No one is going to take the time to read it. Remember, we are only working with 6 seconds.
DO: Use bullet points and embolden important dates and titles. This makes everything flow and helps the important things stand out when someone glances at your resume.
DON’T: Include an unprofessional or low-quality photo. It is better to have no photo than to have a low quality one.
DO: Add a picture. People want to put a face to the name. This will help your resume be more memorable.
DON’T: Make it longer than two pages. Unless, you have many years of experience and all your critical information will not fit on one.
DO: Utilize your one page as best as possible. Be selective with what information you include. Also, summarize, summarize, summarize. However, make sure to include low level jobs too. They show that you are willing to do jobs that people might deem as insignificant.
DON’T: Design it yourself. Unless you are a graphic designer or have designed similar documents before, don’t bother.
DO: Use a template. Templates are all over the place, and they can get super creative. Not to mention, many of them are free! There is no excuse to have a boring resume when there are so many resources available. Put time into your resume, and people will notice.
