2. Stop and Help
First, and most importantly, stop. Immediately call 911 if you need emergency medical assistance.
An auto accident can happen anywhere. If possible, stop in a safe location away from traffic. In the event that you are in an auto accident without any injuries, you may suggest driving to a nearby parking lot or side street for safety. Make sure that you stay in a well-lit area which can be easily found by the police.
Never drive away from an auto accident.
3. Call the Police
Call 911 and tell the operator your emergency and location. If anyone is hurt, they will be able to send help. Police will be able to file an accident report.
4. Do Not Admit Fault
Even if you suspect that the accident was your fault, don’t admit it. Discuss the specifics of the accident only with the police and your insurance agency. Anything you say could be used against you in legal proceedings.
5. Exchange Information
Exchange information with other people in the accident. Try to get the following information.
- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- Insurance Policy Number
- Insurance Company
If witnesses stop, make sure to get their names and phone numbers.
